Ventura Board Game Review

Ventura Description In an age of great battles, valiant leaders, and unscrupulous mercenary armies, fortune lies within your grasp. Ventura is a board game of nobility and conquest for players.

Set in 14th century Italy, Ventura puts players in control of warring noble houses, each vying for control of the countries growing wealth. Balance your houses earnings and maintain your hired soldiers to keep your familys noble standing.

Remember, the best armies are also the ones that cost the most! With more than plastic pieces, 40 Territory tiles, 4 Family Boards, a scoring board, and over cards, Ventura will whisk players into a world of warring mercenaries and noble families, all seeking control of Italys burgeoning wealth.

How will you spend your fortune? Players: 2 - 4 Playtime: 90 min Year Published: Minimum Age: 13 Learning: [ Vote] Strategy: [ Vote].

Nevertheless, the victory conditions are soooo wonky that it's absolutely impossible to have any idea who is going to win And one can actually win the game because of a sudden change in turn-order!

Ventura does work; but it certainly feels like playtesting on it had been somewhat limited. A second edition is very much in order.

Nevertheless, I do like Ventura; but if you're going to play it, A expect the unexpected at game end; and B play to either capturing a city or 50 VP, definitely NOT 30!

Other cloudy scenarios that came up through playing Event cards, we resolved in the spirit of the basic rules, such as an Army splitting into separate Companies on the same territory if its Captain is removed by a Plot card prior to retreat.

We think that's what should have happened, but there was room to print it on the card to avoid uncertainty.

The cards, tiles, and numerous molded plastic figures are of outstanding quality and durability. However, the numbers on the Troops were very hard to see.

In terms of planning strategy, you need to know which of your opponents' Troops are in the vicinity, and it's going to require a lot of squinting and lifting figures from the board unless you paint the numbers.

Which I did, because I want people to enjoy playing Ventura, but a game with this price tag could have saved me the trouble.

Strategy tips: 1-Conscripted Companies are weak and hinder your Army's movement, so deploy only if battle is imminent, and make them your first or second card.

If you can't pay them all during next upkeep, fine. They can support an Army or grab a territory in the meantime, and if they die in battle you won't have to pay them anyway.

Money is worth nothing at the end of the game, and the points leader will still lose if you capture a city first.

Ventura has European-style "multiple-phases and steps within phases" game mechanics combined with some classic Ameritrash combat with Troop stats via cards and terrain bonuses.

It isn't exactly like any other game I own, so I will play it here and there with friends who want something more than a casual combat game or are really into Italian history , but the whole package is a little less than the sum of its parts.

I just finished unpacking and reading through the instructions. I am very impressed for the price and can't wait to play a game.

Everything is good quality and looks very cool. Seems like some of the criticism is that it ends too early before things really get going.

From reading the rules, it seems like that could be easily fixed by not stopping at 30 points instead play to 50 or so like some have suggested on BGG or not allowing the option to buy points or something similar.

Review 1 year later and several 2 player games: I 've played several games all with 2 player my wife and it is definitely 5 stars for me.

My wife tends to play defensively while I play offensively. It's actually my favorite board game out of about 12 that I own.

It is certainly more of a war game, so I imagine is more attractive to men than women. It's not my wife's favorite but she will play it.

I would love to play this with 3 or 4 people. A house rule that helps, I believe, is to divide the number of prestige points a player can get from trading in money by 2.

This forces a player not be idle and just trade in money and end the game quickly. It will extend the game just enough to allow a few extra turns, which usually creates an extra 1 or 2 battles.

It gives the game just the right amount of tension. A player with a large cash flow can't end the game super quick because the opponent now has enough time build an army and attack a rich player before they can win!

Overall, this feels like chess with strong strategic planning and subtle tactics. It requires a player to plan long term and use tactical moves such as threatening your opponent on one part of the board while secretively planning a quick assault on an undefended territory at another location.

I love that a lot of the tension comes from positioning your pieces based on the territory tiles and looking for the upper hand or threating your opponent with an attack but not attacking instead just controlling an area.

Very fun! I think it is an underrated game on BGG and deserves to be more popular. One person found this helpful.

Seller was great: received my product promptly and in good condition. As far as the game itself is concerned, every interesting game, historically themed well, good quality, and offers an enjoyable abstract experience.

Only looses a star because of the rules something I am picky about. They are a little difficult to follow. But still worth the money, especially since it is out of print.

Although the gameplay may not be the best, I really enjoy the quality of the production. Wonderful game. Knowledgeable of Tactics in War.

I've been using Zatu for a few years for board games. Recently bought Sub Terra and a Bunny Kingdom expansion. They're always competitive on price and delivery is nice and fast - will keep returning every Christmas!

Always good service and timely shipping. Ordered from Zatu a few times. They have great prices too. They really responsive if there is a problem.

They are officially my game supplier! I ordered a game from Zatu, for delivery in Europe. It arrived in perfect condition, and I was able to track its progress.

Well satisfied, and I'll use them again soon. Good prices. Preorder arrived intact few days after its release in a well packed box. Great service as always.

Was a pre order great price cheapest I found. The delivery company that they had the package before anything from zatu but that could of just been something with the system.

Other than that pretty much perfect. Excellent transaction, quite speedy given the holiday period. Fantastic store, great selection of items, excellent prices, and just exceptional all around.

Top critical review. Christensen Top Contributor: Board Games. Reviewed in the United States on July 2, Ventura is a good bit of fun, but a game with such high production value and depth should have a bigger payoff for playing it.

Just when you feel like everyone is getting something going, it's over. Even when you win, there's this feeling of, "Ummm I guess that's the end.

These tiles provide income, combat bonuses, victory points, etc for their owners. However, once the troops start moving around, it becomes immediately clear how much impact that initial setup has on who wins the game.

There are 2 ways to win. Either be the first to hit 30 points on the scoring track, or capture any opponent's city.

After 4 or 5 games, nobody has won on points, which is awesome or frustrating, depending on your point of view. Every time someone moved into the 20s, someone else with fewer points captured a city and won.

That's the fun part. Now for the gripes. Some minor rule clarifications could have been printed on cards, and the rulebook is unclear or seems contradictory in a few places.

Army vs. I just summarized in one sentence what the rulebook fumbled through in 4 paragraphs. What this really means is that you need a Company in your city or you can't deploy a Captain, but that's redundant because it says elsewhere that your Garrison Company cannot leave your city.

We decided they don't, because it's a bonus granted, and a Captain is not a Company under the basic rules.
